Description:
Abstract:
The Idaho Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit's Landscape Dynamics Lab created hyperdistribution grids and calculated species richness using wildlife habitat relationship (whr) models for 317 (amphibians = 13, birds = 193, mammals = 90, reptiles = 21) native, non-anthropogenic (species not adapted to human landscapes) vertebrates in Idaho. Measures of species richness are simple, straight- forward assessments of the diversity of wildlife within a given area. Although species richness does not account for species composition and the accuracy of richness measures have many inherent shortcomings, the hyperdistribution grids created for the IDGAP project are useful for characterizing regional biological diversity and for assessing the relative contribution of a proposed area. However, caution is needed in their interpretation. Please refer to the final Idaho GAP report.
Purpose:
These data were developed for the Idaho Gap Analysis Project. They comply to minimum standards of the Gap Analysis Program of the Biological Resources Division, US Geological Survey as of January 1, 1999. These data are intended to aid in state level assessment of natural resources and are not intended for use at a scale greater than 1:100,000.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Measures of species richness can only be as accurate as the WHR models from which they are derived. Of the Idaho GAP WHR models assessed (222 of 379 with more than 10 assessment areas) for accuracy, 93% had greater than 80% correct present. Because errors in WHR models are not randomly distributed across the landscape and because lack of information on a species tends to result in models that overestimate habitat, the species richness of an area can be artifically high. Extreme caution is needed in their interpretation. Please see the final Idaho GAP Analysis Report for more information.
Logical_Consistency_Report: Not applicable for raster data.
Completeness_Report: All cells within Idaho are assigned a richness value.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
The hypergrids were constructed from WHR models for the native, non-anthropogenic species in each taxon. Each species included is listed as a separate attribute using the TNC element code with the value of 1 indicating presence and 0 indicating absence. The last item, richness, is the sum of all species predicted to occur in that hexagon. See the Idaho GAP Modeling database and the final Idaho GAP report for informtion on each species and interpretation of richness.
