"Keeping
Common Species Common"
GAP Analysis originated in Idaho in the late 1980's as a system for assessing the
distribution of native plant and animal distributions in relation to land
stewardship. Since then, GAP has grown to a federally funded program under
the Biological Resources Division of the United States Geological Survey.
GAP's main objectives are to: map current land cover, predict the distribution
of vertebrate species, document the representation of vertebrate species and
land cover types in areas managed for the long-term maintenance of biodiversity,
and provide this data to the public. This is accomplished through the
cooperation of many state and federal organizations. For more information on
GAP, please visit the National Gap Analysis
Program website.
